Tooth

The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and usually pink in color. Any alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer. The following can be signs at the beginning of a pathologic process or cancerous growth:

  • Reddish patches (erythroplakia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth
  • A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
  • A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth
  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
  • Difficulty in chewing or swallowing

These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face and/or neck. Pain does not always occur with pathology, and curiously, is not often associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer.

We would recommend performing an oral cancer self-examination monthly. Remember that your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems. Do not ignore suspicious lumps or sores. Please contact us so we may help.

FAQ

Oral Pathology FAQ

  • What is oral pathology?

Oral pathology is the study and diagnosis of diseases in the mouth, throat, and related structures, including cancer, infections, and other abnormalities.

  • What are the early signs of oral cancer?

Early signs of oral cancer may include persistent sores, reddish or whitish patches, lumps or thickening in the mouth, and difficulty swallowing or speaking. If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to see a specialist for an evaluation.

  • How is a suspicious area in the mouth diagnosed?

If a suspicious area is found, a biopsy may be performed. This involves removing a small sample of tissue for examination under a microscope to determine if it is cancerous or benign.

  • Is oral cancer painful?

Oral cancer may not cause pain in its early stages. This is why it’s important to have regular oral exams and to report any unusual changes, even if they are not painful.

  • How often should I perform an oral cancer self-exam?

We recommend performing a self-exam of your mouth once a month. Look for any abnormal patches, sores, or lumps that don’t heal within a couple of weeks.

  • What happens if oral pathology indicates cancer?

If a diagnosis of cancer is made, our team will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan, which may include surgery, radiation therapy, or referral to an oncology specialist.
