Sinus Precautions

Key Guidelines to Support Healing

Following surgery, it's important to follow these specific precautions to ensure proper healing when there is a communication between the sinus and mouth.

Checkmark

Medication and Avoiding Pressure

Take prescriptions as directed and use over-the-counter nasal decongestants. Avoid spitting, blowing your nose, or sneezing to minimize sinus pressure.

Checkmark

Diet and Oral Care

Stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side. Avoid straws and be gentle when rinsing with salt water.

Checkmark

Monitor and Communicate

Slight nasal bleeding is normal, but report any increased drainage or pain to our office. Keep all follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.

Tooth

Because of the close relationship between upper back teeth and the sinus, a communication between the sinus and mouth sometimes results from surgery. If this complication has occurred, it often heals slowly and with difficulty, but certain precautions will assist healing and we ask that you faithfully follow these instructions for the next few weeks.

  • Take prescriptions as directed.

  • An over-the-counter nasal decongestant such as Claritin D should be taken.

  • Do not forcefully spit.

  • Do not smoke.

  • Do not use a straw.

  • Do not forcefully blow your nose, even though your sinus may feel “stuffy” or they may be some nasal drainage.

  • Try not to sneeze; it will cause undesired sinus pressure. If you must sneeze keep your mouth open.

  • Eat only soft food for several days and always try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth.

  • Do not rinse vigorously. Gentle salt water swishes may be used.

Slight bleeding from the nose is not uncommon for several days after surgery.

Please keep our office advised of any changes in your condition, especially is drainage or pain increases. It is important that you keep all future appointments until this complication has resolved.
